Scientists have calculated the amount of water some of the Himalayan glaciers contain. They have found that the snow falling directly onto the surface of the glacier contributes only about one-quarter of the water that would be needed to form a glacier of that size. The rest of the snow comes from avalanches cascading from the mountain's shoulders.
